I cannot say I didn't run to the Theater to see the new Nosferatu Movie by Robert Eggers with Lily-Rose Depp and Bill Skarsgard.
As a big horror fan (books and movies all the same) and an even bigger one of Murnau's work, I went for this one with a mix of nerdy enthusiasm and wariness.
Call me an old bugger, but the original is always better in my book, especially when the first version is signed by someone as great as F.W. Murnau. But, I always like to see what's the next generations can do. More often than not, It's unfortunately tasteless and I'm disappointed. But in this case, I loved it !
The 1922 version by Murnau is still my favorite but Eggers' Nosferatu comes close behind. Really close. I'm probably not super objective as I really like Bill Skarsgard. I'm always stunned by his acting skills and the range of emotions and feelings he's able to share with the viewer. And he didn't disappoint me as Count Orlok. Far from that. He was majestic!
Nosferatu is the quintessence of Gothic Horror and the new movie fit and served to the genre. The aesthetic is awesome and I like the vintage/modern mix in the Technics. It's still as off-putting and eerie as the original. Still as scary in his singular style.
If you didn't watch it yet, go for it ! And it could be the right time to re-watch or watch for the first time the other Nosferatu movies. Herzog's version isn't as timeless and good in my opinion. And Murnau's version is definitely my favorite. David Lee Fisher's version is interesting, but I didn't root the same for it. Murnau's and Eggers' version are definitely the top ones for me.
