I usually recommend only movies on The Watchlist, but this show is awesome and I needed to post a review about it.
What is it about ?
The White Lotus is an American dark comedy drama anthology television series created by Mike White for HBO that premiered on July 11, 2021. The series follows the exploits of the guests and staff during a week spent at a luxury global resort hotel chain. The first season was filmed and set in Hawaii, the second in Sicily, and the third in Thailand.
My thoughts about this show.
This show is awesome!
I started watching it only two days ago and I literally binge watch it within the weekend (except for the last two episodes of season 3 which will be live only tomorrow and next month).
It is mostly a dark comedy and satire about rich people issues on vacations and how they treat people, folklore, local population and staff when they go on holidays abroad.
The landscape are stunning, filmed for the 3 seasons, respectively in Hawaii, Sicily and Thailand and every season comes with a new set of new people coming on holidays. Even if the three seasons comes with new people, everything is still linked by a few recurrent characters.
It is dark, funny, stunning and I particularly love the contrast Mike White highlight between the local and their real issues mostly due those rich people or at least due to the luxury resort being here (stolen land from indigenous, local prostitution and bad behavior against women, men moving to Thailand as typical white man with money also called passport bro...) and the wealthy people staying in the resort on a stunning landscapes and local tradition background. Like a way to show the rotten side of those stunning luxury resort around the world.
The character building is deep and the backstory and multiple plots perfectly crafted and linked all together. Each resort comes with its own set of issues, local tradition and vibes.
The general acting is awesome, spiced up with some big faces like Jason Isaacs (the main reason why I stopped everything to start watching the show when someone recommended it to me last weekend), Jennifer Coolidge, Jon Gries and Natasha Rothwell.
There are 8 episodes per season for an hour or so each. And it is right now streaming on HBO max. Last episode of season 3 coming in April 2025 and the season 4 already confirmed.
For what we already know, season 4 should be filmed in another European location (season 2 was in Sicily, Europe) but we don't know yet where. So far, White always chose a destination where a real White Lotus Resort exist. Season 4 should be aired late 2026 or early 2027 (nothing confirmed yet).
