I am hopeless for monochromatic aesthetics 💜 Even when the movie is bad, it gives so much depth and charisma.
In this case, the film is far from being bad. I liked the claustrophobic feeling during the whole movie that is as unsettling as the story itself.
The fact that it's film in 35mm mono helps a lot with this closed/intimate effect.
I felt anxious and unhinged as much as the characters and it is crazy how the feeling and the slow decent to madness is shared and resonate so easily while you're watching the movie.
It's immersive and feels personal. That's something I always feel in Robert Eggers's movies, but more deeper with The Lighthouse.
Eggers injects some unexpected levity in this folk dark sea-tale. And the acting is the cherry on top. It's masterfully played and beautifully and artfully crafted.
A psychological folk tale Horror that I definitely recommend !
