Raw, by Julia Ducournau

In Justine’s family everyone is a vet and a vegetarian. At 16, she’s a gifted teen ready to take on her first year in vet school, where her older sister also studies. There, she gets no time to settle: hazing starts right away. Justine is forced to eat raw meat for the first time in her life. Unexpected consequences emerge as her true self begins to form.

Good coming of age cannibal movie where for once, the feminin character is in control of own carnal needs.

From vegetarian to plain gore cannibal , the character of Justine shows a lurid violence and feral sexuality in this movie.

The atmosphere is deep and immersive and you can feel the swap within her and every step along her own discovery of herself and her newfound carnal needs.

I'm French, but living fully abroad for the last 12 years means that English became my first language and I often struggle to read or watch a movie in French now, without having a weird impression (or read a book). But for once I really enjoyed watching it in French (original language of the movie) for the dark and feral poetry that the French language add to the vibes of this movie.

Not as gross as I was expecting. The first gore scene (the first human flesh she ate) kind of made me feel unsettled and gross but then, strangely, the more gore it become the less you struggle with it. As if you accept it as she tries to.

The eerie atmosphere gives an intimate and introspective ambiance. Making you feel like you are experiencing all of it at the same time Justine does.

Really an unique movie. Not the plain gory exaggerated US style cannibal movie but a more darkly poetic flesh eating experience. This New French Extremity movement in horror cinema is starting to produce really good movies and I'm happy to see a full female lead and a woman being the camera on this one.
